    Um, Yeah! More great tip examples on Blue Ridge Cabin Home. I like the idea of learning (e.g.) a new C-lick, then using it often at a jam to get it's feel. Also, sticking to the melody for most of sixteen bars, except letting it rip on one phrase, or one chord. A little at a time. "It's just that easy!"

    For where I am learning bluegrass flatpicking, I like to play the melody in the chords, (trying to be loud, clear, and in time), till the 2nd turn around. Going from the final 5 to 1, I'll treat the first half of the 5, like a 5, and the second half points back to the 1. That's about enough spice for now, till I get a better handle on nerves, and familiarity. Appreciate your approach to learning this stuff.

    To be fair you said it was going to be a bit controversial.... I'm going to pick up what you said about recording one's own rhythm track. It's something we used to have to do before the glory days of UA-cam and there is something to be said for it, but to me the point of Strum Machine and of jam tracks in general is to practice, get used to, and gain confidence in playing with other people (when you haven't got any other people there). Recording your own backing track is fine but it means you are playing to your own timing and rhythm. When you get out either to a jam or playing in a band you have to be able to play to someone else's timing and rhythm. To me that is the reason to practice with jam tracks.

    Everyone is different and what works for one person doesn't work for another. A hangover from fingerpicking rag-time in jug bands in the 1960 left me for years with a pinky permanently welded to the pick guard. A couple of years ago I tried floating, following a player/teacher I had a great deal of admiration for. At first I was stumbling round like a blind man without a dog, missing strings all over the place. This same teacher had a set of string spacing exercises and after working with them for a few weeks I was hitting the strings again. Once I had mastered that I was able to do exactly what you talk about in your third point about pick strokes, to make my pick stokes bigger and freer. It may not work for everyone but for me the move to a floating right hand has hugely freed up my picking and also improved my tone control.

    A looper pedal works great for playin a rhythm track down, and then doin lead over. It does have limitations, but it will do wonders for perfecting your timing. Bad timing can ruin a song or make yourself unable to play with anyone else.

    Very good advice about not holding the entire chord. I was trying to do this kind of stuff holding the whole chord for years, and it made what I was doing extremely hard. Just getting more used to dropping parts of the chords to free up some fingers for other bits, and it makes it much more possible to actually play the melodies. That's the way learning goes as often as not, you get some advice, and then 5 years later you realise, "oh, yeah, now I understand"...

    • @jimmccarley9609
      @jimmccarley9609 10 днів тому

      Agreed Michael, I have big fingers, so I try to fret only the parts I'm picking. That first fret C note, and F note are easily smothered. Love getting new ideas.

    The double stop drone might be the first version of harmony ever produced by humans. You can find it all over ancient Indian music (the tambura providing the drone for the soloist to 'harmonize' over) and in ancient sacred Western music, like chant music from the 1100s from Hildegard von Bingen. There's a reason it sounds so good, it's in our DNA! :)

    One of the songs I used to teach myself mandolin, transferring my knowledge over from guitar: “Here Comes The Sun.” George Harrison actually used a capo way up on a guitar, to get it into a mandolin register. I thought, hey, skip the middle man and figure it out on a mandolin. It sounds great, too!
